Better Gift Ideas - Silver Bullion coins

Every kid's birthday celebration that I am invited to, I find myself figuring out what to buy as a gift under 40-50 bucks. I always end up buying some toy or clothes from a local store which, in most cases, will not last long, lose total value in no time or will be sitting idle with bunch of other toys or clothes they already have. Instead of giving a gift card, toys, clothes, shoes or even cash as gift why can't we gift something which may increase in value, reap investment rewards and help the child in future?

I encourage you to consider giving US Mint Silver bullion coins. US Mint Gold bullion coins can also be an option if your gift budget is high and if you don't mind spending extra dollars. I personally like American Eagle Silver bullion coins. They are offered in only one size - 1 ounce (~31g). The best part of these American Eagle 1 ounce Silver bullion coins is that they are priced close to $40 (as of this writing) and they fit my gift budget. Buy a nice and fancy silver coin holder for less than $5 for better presentation. One of the best and most reputable online store for buying these coins that I know is www.apmex.com. I have a very good shopping experience with APMEX and I found it to be trustworthy. If you prefer buying proof coins (priced higher than bullion coins) I suggest buying them from www.usmint.gov.

Please note that there is no guarantee that silver or gold will offer returns always and their price may drop as well. But the likelihood of increase in value or holding same value is very high. This is just another gifting idea for you to consider, and if you do so I strongly suggest you to do your research on different varieties of silver/gold coins that are offered etc before buying. Also, I recommend storing them in a bank lock box rather than holding them in your pocket or at home.

I like the idea of gifting of US Savings (I or EE) bonds as well but I heard that they might affect child's eligibility for college financial aid as they need to be declared in Student aid applications.
